July 21, 2006 - African American Alcohol And Other Drugs Coalition on the Move! - Burke Delivers

BACKGROUND ON AAOD

The African American Alcohol and Other Drug Services Advisory Council of Los Angeles County is a community-based coalition of alcohol & drug, homeless, mental health service providers established in 1993 by a grant from the State of California to the National Black Alcoholism Council (NBAC).

Our mission is to study, design, develop and advocate for policies and funding that improve alcohol and drug services for African Americans and other poor minorities in South Central Los Angeles.

Our members serve over 25,000 men, women and children annually. Modalities provided by our members include inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, detoxification, aftercare/continuing care.

The purpose of AAAOD is to link alcohol and drug treatment programs in a coordinated regional continuum where client needs drive the system. We work together to develop community level responses, encourage regional leadership, and secure national, state and local resources.

68% of LA County funded alcohol and drug programs participate in AAAOD.

Member agencies contribute a diverse range of experiences in reaching hard to serve groups who also have multiple conditions.

AAAOD has provided over 21,000 hours of technical assistance to 400 new or emerging African American AOD agencies in California since 1993. More than 60% have increased revenues or capacity from baseline by 25%.

The coalition's focus is to build a general reliance on the collective experience of its members to ensure available services for the poor, uninsured, indigent and other disenfranchised groups.

The goal is to provide an accessible, understandable, and credible policy/advisory group for minority programs.

AAAOD exists to establish and maintain a permanent presence for grass roots organizations.

Our vision includes a community-wide response to evolving service delivery systems, outcome driven programs and services, comprehensive long-term solutions to community needs and education, training and technical assistance.

AAAOD conducts education and training, community organizing, community accountability actions, and policy work.

AAAOD's advice is provided to the California State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, LA County Department of Alcohol and Drug Program Administration, State Department of Alcohol and Drug Program Administration and LA County Supervisor Board of Supervisors.
